Fellowship: science writer (English)


CERN is the world's largest particle physics laboratory. It is one of the most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics: finding out what the universe is made of and how it works.

The communications group at CERN is mandated to generate public engagement in science, to produce and distribute information, to foster community building and to build support for CERN and its missions. Its key audiences are:

  • The general public – to foster engagement with scientific issues
  • The physics community – to provide information about CERN's activities
  • Science and technology decision makers – to promote CERN's activities
  • Industry – to encourage partnerships
  • The CERN community – to provide information and build motivation
  • Local communities – to provide information and promote events, including activities for local schools

Science writer (English)

In this role based in the communications group’s content section you will work closely with other writers, photographers, multimedia producers and videographers to produce content to engage CERN’s key audiences. Content you produce will be used across a variety of channels including scientific journals, reports, websites, social media and within multimedia content.

Day-to-day activities will include:

  • Interviewing, fact checking, researching
  • Synthesizing and repackaging content for specific audiences
  • Writing, editing and subediting content
  • Managing standards for language and style
  • Managing content online

Prerequisite skills, competencies and aptitudes

  • An excellent command of English (knowledge of French a plus)
  • An ability to understand complex scientific concepts and articulate these in a variety of engaging ways as appropriate to target audience
  • Excellent analytical skills, an eye for detail
  • Ability to respond positively to critical feedback
  • Background in physics a plus
